Test and Tag in Perth by Spark Tech Electrical

Test and Tag Services for Perth Workplaces

Every business in Western Australia has a duty under work health and safety law to keep electrical equipment safe for the people who use it. Testing and tagging is the practical way you prove that duty has been met. Spark Tech Electrical (EC 17280) tests and tags portable appliances, extension leads, power boards and RCDs to the AS/NZS 3760 standard, then attaches a durable tag showing the test date, the next due date and who carried out the work.

We are a licensed electrical contractor based in Padbury, working across Joondalup, Hillarys, Duncraig, Scarborough, Stirling, Wanneroo and the wider Perth metro. Whether you run a small office, a cafe, a workshop, a construction site or a multi-site operation, we make compliance straightforward and keep disruption to your team as low as possible.

What Testing and Tagging Actually Covers

Testing and tagging applies to any electrical item that plugs into a socket by a flexible cord. The process has two parts. First, a visual inspection checks the plug, cord, casing and fittings for damage, wear, exposed conductors or signs of overheating. Second, a portable appliance tester measures earth continuity, insulation resistance and polarity to confirm the item is electrically safe.

  • Computers, monitors, printers and chargers
  • Kitchen appliances such as microwaves, kettles, toasters and fridges
  • Power tools, battery chargers and workshop equipment
  • Extension leads, power boards and portable RCDs
  • Class I (earthed) and Class II (double insulated) appliances

Items that pass receive a tag. Items that fail are removed from service and clearly marked so they cannot be used until repaired or replaced. We log every result so you have a clean audit trail.

How Often Do You Need to Test and Tag?

AS/NZS 3760 does not set one fixed interval for everyone. The frequency depends on the environment the equipment lives in and how harshly it is used. Equipment in a clean, dry office can go far longer between tests than gear on a building site exposed to dust, moisture and constant movement.

  • Construction and demolition sites: every three months
  • Factories, workshops and manufacturing: every six to twelve months
  • Commercial kitchens, hospitality and retail: every twelve months
  • Offices and low-risk indoor settings: typically every five years for fixed gear, with leads checked more often

We help you set sensible intervals for your site, then track due dates so nothing slips. New equipment generally only needs a visual check and a tag before first use, not a full electrical test.

Construction sites in WA: portable equipment and RCDs on building and construction sites must be tested every three months. We can set up a recurring schedule so your site stays compliant without you having to remember the dates.

RCD Testing for Compliance

Residual current devices are your last line of defence against electric shock. In Western Australia at least two RCDs must protect all power and lighting circuits, and those devices only protect people if they actually trip when they should. RCD testing confirms each device disconnects within the required time.

We carry out both push button tests and trip time testing using calibrated instruments, covering switchboard RCDs and portable RCDs used on site. Because we are a licensed electrical contractor, we can also investigate and fix faulty RCDs, nuisance tripping or wiring issues we uncover during testing. That is the advantage of using a qualified electrician rather than a tag-only operator.

Why Use a Licensed Electrical Contractor

Plenty of operators can clip a tag onto a lead. Far fewer can do anything about a problem they find. As a licensed EC contractor, Spark Tech Electrical works to the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules and operates under the oversight of EnergySafety WA (Building and Energy), the state electrical safety regulator.

If a test reveals a damaged appliance, a failing RCD, an overloaded board or a wiring fault, we can repair it on the spot or quote it then and there. You deal with one trade for testing and any follow up work, instead of booking a separate electrician and waiting for a return visit.

Records, Tags and Audit Trails

Compliance is only as good as your paperwork. After every visit we provide a register listing each item tested, its result, the test date and the next due date. This documentation is what you show an auditor, an insurer or a WorkSafe inspector to demonstrate due diligence.

For multi-site businesses and facility managers, we can keep an ongoing asset register and send reminders ahead of due dates, so testing happens on time across every location. Consistent records also make it easy to budget and to spot equipment that fails repeatedly and should be replaced.

What Affects the Cost

The cost of testing and tagging depends on a few practical factors rather than a flat rate. The main drivers are the number of items, how spread out they are across your site, accessibility, the environment and whether you need a one off visit or a recurring schedule.

  • Total quantity of appliances, leads and boards
  • Number of sites or floors and how accessible the equipment is
  • Frequency of testing required for your environment
  • Any RCD testing or repairs needed alongside the tagging

Larger volumes and regular scheduled visits are generally more efficient per item. We are happy to walk your site and give you a clear quote before any work starts.

Test and Tag Perth FAQs

Common questions Perth homeowners and businesses ask before booking. Still not sure? Just give us a call.

There is no single law in WA that names testing and tagging directly, but work health and safety duties require you to keep electrical equipment safe for workers. Testing and tagging to AS/NZS 3760 is the recognised way to meet that duty and prove it. For high risk environments like construction sites, regular testing is effectively mandatory.
It depends on the environment. Construction sites need testing every three months, factories and workshops every six to twelve months, and hospitality and retail roughly every twelve months. Low risk office equipment can go up to five years for fixed items, with leads checked more often. We help you set the right interval for your workplace.
Testing and tagging checks individual portable appliances and leads for electrical safety, then tags each item. RCD testing confirms that residual current devices, your safety switches, trip fast enough to protect people from shock. Both are part of a complete electrical safety program, and we carry out both during the same visit when needed.
New equipment does not need a full electrical test before first use under AS/NZS 3760. It only requires a visual inspection to confirm there is no transport damage, then a tag showing it has entered service. After that, it falls into your normal testing schedule based on the environment it is used in.
Any item that fails is immediately removed from service and clearly marked so it cannot be used until it is fixed or replaced. Because we are a licensed electrical contractor, we can often repair the fault on the spot or quote it for you, rather than leaving you to arrange a separate electrician.
We are based in Padbury and service the Perth northern suburbs including Joondalup, Hillarys, Duncraig, Scarborough, Stirling and Wanneroo, plus the wider Perth metro. We work around your trading hours and can set up recurring visits for multi-site businesses across the metro area.
