Lighting Installation in Perth by Spark Tech Electrical

Good lighting changes how a home feels and works, and it does it without renovating a single wall. Spark Tech Electrical installs lighting for homeowners right across Perth, from swapping tired halogens for crisp LED downlights to designing layered lighting for a new build, kitchen or alfresco. We are a licensed electrical contractor (EC 17280) based in Padbury, and every fitting we install is wired and tested to the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules.

Because mains-powered lighting is fixed wiring, it is electrical work that must be carried out by a licensed electrician in Western Australia. That covers far more than screwing in a globe. It means correct cable sizing, protected circuits, properly terminated connections and a tested result, so the install is safe to live with for years and not just bright on day one.

LED Downlight Installation and Halogen Upgrades

The most common lighting job we do is replacing old halogen downlights with modern LED fittings. Halogens run hot, burn through power and fail often. LED downlights draw a fraction of the energy, last far longer and give you a cleaner, more even light. We can match the colour temperature room by room, warm white for living and bedrooms, cooler white for kitchens, bathrooms and the laundry.

When we upgrade halogens we also check what is hiding above the ceiling. Old halogen transformers, brittle wiring and fittings buried in insulation are common in older Perth homes and they are a genuine fire risk. We remove redundant gear, confirm clearances and leave the circuit tidy and compliant.

Indoor and Feature Lighting

Beyond downlights, we install pendants, batten fixes, LED strip and channel, under-cabinet lighting, wall lights and statement fittings. A well planned indoor scheme uses a few layers, general light to fill the room, task light where you cook or read, and accent light to set the mood. We can wire these onto separate switches or dimmers so you control each layer independently.

Renovating or extending? We are happy to plan lighting positions from the floor plan, mark out the ceiling, and run new circuits before the gyprock goes up. Getting the wiring right at rough-in stage is far cheaper than chasing walls later.

Outdoor, Garden and Security Lighting

Outdoor lighting earns its keep on looks and safety. We install alfresco and patio lighting, wall and step lights, garden and path lighting, and weatherproof fittings rated for Perth's coastal conditions in suburbs like Hillarys and Scarborough. For security we fit sensor floodlights and motion-activated lighting around entries, driveways and side access, so the property lights up when something moves and stays dark when it does not.

All exterior fittings need the correct IP rating and weatherproof termination so moisture and salt air do not creep in. We size and seal everything for where it actually sits, not just where it looks good in the catalogue.

Smart Lighting, Dimmers and Sensors

If you want more control, we can add dimmers, timers, daylight and motion sensors, or app and voice controlled smart switches that work with the systems you already use. Smart lighting is handy for scenes, schedules and holiday mode, and it pairs well with sensor lighting in hallways, robes and bathrooms where hands-free switching just makes sense.

Not every old fitting plays nicely with LED dimming. We match the dimmer to the driver so you get smooth, flicker-free control instead of buzzing or a band of light that never fully dims.

Safety, RCDs and Smoke Alarms

Lighting work is a good moment to bring the rest of the circuit up to standard. Under WA rules a home must have at least two RCDs (safety switches) protecting its power and lighting circuits, and when we touch a lighting circuit we confirm that protection is in place and working.

WA point of sale and lease rule: when a Perth property is sold or leased it must have mains-powered, interconnected smoke alarms and the required RCD protection. If you are selling or renting out, we can bring the smoke alarms and safety switches up to standard while we handle your lighting.

What Affects the Cost

We never quote lighting blind, because price depends on the job in front of us. The main factors are the number and type of fittings, whether we are replacing existing points or running brand new circuits, ceiling and roof-space access, the wiring you already have, and any switchboard or RCD work the job triggers.

  • How many fittings, and downlights versus pendants, strip or feature lights
  • Like-for-like replacement or new wiring, points and switching
  • Roof space access, insulation and the age of existing wiring
  • Dimmers, sensors or smart controls added to the scope
  • Any switchboard upgrade or RCD work the lighting circuit requires

We walk the job, talk through what you want each room to do, and give you a clear quote before any work starts.

Lighting Installation Perth FAQs

Common questions Perth homeowners and businesses ask before booking. Still not sure? Just give us a call.

Yes. Installing or replacing mains-powered light fittings is fixed electrical work, so in Western Australia it must be done by a licensed electrician. You can change a plug-in lamp yourself, but anything hardwired, including downlights, pendants and switches, has to be installed and tested by a licensed contractor like Spark Tech Electrical (EC 17280) to meet AS/NZS 3000.
Yes, that is one of our most common jobs. We remove the old halogen fittings and any redundant transformers, check the wiring and insulation clearances above the ceiling, and fit modern LED downlights in the colour temperature you prefer. LEDs use far less power, run cooler and last much longer, so you cut both your energy use and the fire risk old halogens carry.
Usually the dimmer and the LED driver are not matched. Many older dimmers were built for halogen loads and do not dim modern LEDs smoothly, which causes flicker, buzzing or a light that never fully dims. We fit a trailing-edge or LED-rated dimmer suited to your fittings, which gives smooth, quiet, flicker-free control across the full range.
Yes. We install alfresco, garden, path and step lighting, plus sensor floodlights and motion-activated security lighting around entries, driveways and side access. Outdoor fittings need the correct IP rating and weatherproof termination, which matters in Perth's coastal suburbs where salt air is harsh. We size and seal each fitting for its exact location so it lasts.
Not always, but sometimes. If your lighting work adds load or we find the board lacks the required RCD protection, an upgrade may be needed. Under WA rules a home must have at least two RCDs covering its power and lighting circuits. We check the board during the quote and tell you up front if any switchboard or safety switch work is part of the job.
We are based in Padbury and cover the northern suburbs including Joondalup, Hillarys, Duncraig, Scarborough, Stirling and Wanneroo, plus the wider Perth metro. Whether it is a single faulty downlight or lighting out a full new build, we come to you. Call 0461 359 510 or email info@sparktechelectricalperth.com.au to book a quote.
