Down Lights in Perth by Spark Tech Electrical

Professional Down Lighting Installation Across Perth

Down lights are the most popular way to light a Perth home or workspace. Set flush into the ceiling, they throw clean, even light without the bulk of a pendant or batten, which keeps rooms feeling open and modern. Done properly, a downlight layout removes dark corners, lifts the whole space and adds genuine value to a property.

Spark Tech Electrical is a licensed electrical contractor (EC 17280) based in Padbury. We install, replace and upgrade down lighting for homes and businesses right across the Perth northern suburbs, including Joondalup, Hillarys, Duncraig, Scarborough, Stirling and Wanneroo, plus the greater metro area. Because down lights run on mains power, the work must be carried out by a licensed electrician, not a handyman.

Why LED Down Lights Make Sense

Almost every downlight we install today is LED. The old halogen down lights drew around 50 watts each, ran hot and burned out often. A modern LED equivalent uses a fraction of the power and lasts for years, so a ceiling full of them cuts your lighting load noticeably. Over the life of the fitting that adds up on the power bill.

LED also runs cool, which matters for fire safety and for ceiling insulation clearances. Many fittings are now dimmable and come in selectable colour temperatures, so you can set a warm tone in a lounge or bedroom and a brighter, cooler light in a kitchen, laundry or office.

  • Lower running costs compared with halogen
  • Long service life, fewer replacements
  • Cool running, safer around insulation
  • Dimmable and colour-selectable options

Replacing Old Halogen Down Lights

If your home still has halogen down lights, swapping them for LED is one of the easiest upgrades you can make. We remove the old fittings and transformers, check the existing wiring is sound, and fit modern LED down lights in their place. In most cases the existing ceiling holes are reused, so there is little or no patching.

While we are up in the ceiling we inspect the cabling, connections and any old halogen transformers that may be sitting on top of insulation. Tidying that up at the same time is good practice and keeps the installation safe for the long term.

Planning Your Down Light Layout

Good lighting is about spacing as much as it is about the fittings. Too few down lights leaves shadows, too many makes a room feel like an office. We plan placement around the room size, ceiling height, furniture and where you actually need light, such as over a kitchen bench, a reading chair or a workspace.

For renovations and new builds we map out the full layout before any holes are cut, and we keep fittings clear of ceiling joists, air conditioning ducts and manholes. Where you want zones or mood control, we can split the down lights across separate switches or add dimmers.

Commercial and Strata Down Lighting

We also handle down lighting for offices, retail spaces, common areas and strata buildings across Perth. For business owners and facility managers, the priorities are even light levels, reliable fittings, energy efficiency and minimal disruption during fit out. We can quote supply and install, or install fittings you have already specified, and work around trading hours where needed.

Safety and Compliance in Western Australia

All of our electrical work meets the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules and is carried out under our WA electrical contractor licence. Building and Energy (EnergySafety WA) is the regulator, and any network-side supply or metering work involves Western Power as the network operator.

WA requirement: Homes generally need at least two RCDs protecting the power and lighting circuits, so when we add or rework lighting we make sure your switchboard meets that standard. At point of sale or lease, WA also requires hardwired, interconnected smoke alarms, which we can install or check at the same time.

What Affects the Cost

We never quote a flat figure sight unseen, because the price depends on the job. The main factors are the number of down lights, whether it is a new install or a like for like replacement, the type and quality of fitting, ceiling access, ceiling height, and any switchboard or wiring upgrades needed to bring things up to standard.

A straightforward halogen to LED swap reusing existing holes sits at the lower end. New down lights cut into a ceiling, or a layout that needs extra circuits and switching, takes more time and materials. We give you a clear, itemised quote up front so there are no surprises.

Down Lights Perth FAQs

Common questions Perth homeowners and businesses ask before booking. Still not sure? Just give us a call.

Yes. Down lights run on mains electricity, so in Western Australia they must be installed by a licensed electrician. It is illegal and unsafe for an unlicensed person to do this work. A licensed contractor like Spark Tech Electrical (EC 17280) ensures the install meets the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules and is properly protected, which also keeps your insurance valid if anything goes wrong later.
It depends on the room size, ceiling height and how the space is used. As a rough guide, living areas often need a fitting every one and a half to two metres, with extra light placed over benches, desks or reading spots. We plan the exact spacing on site so you get even coverage without the room feeling over lit, and avoid joists and ducts in the ceiling.
Yes, this is one of our most common jobs. We remove the old halogen fittings and transformers, check the existing wiring, and fit modern LED down lights, usually reusing the existing ceiling holes so there is little or no patching. The result runs cooler, uses far less power and lasts much longer than the halogens it replaces.
Considerably. A halogen down light draws around 50 watts, while an LED equivalent uses only a fraction of that for similar or better brightness. Across a ceiling full of fittings the saving adds up on your power bill, and because LEDs last for years you also replace them far less often. They run cool too, which is safer near ceiling insulation.
They can, which is why correct installation matters. Older halogen fittings ran hot and needed clearance from insulation. Modern LED down lights run much cooler, but we still position fittings correctly and keep the right clearances so insulation can sit safely without creating a heat or fire risk. This is part of doing the job to the AS/NZS 3000 standard.
We are based in Padbury and cover the Perth northern suburbs including Joondalup, Hillarys, Duncraig, Scarborough, Stirling and Wanneroo, plus the wider metro area.
