Licensed RCD and safety switch installation across Perth's northern suburbs and wider metro. Spark Tech Electrical (EC 17280) fits compliant RCDs that cut power in milliseconds to protect your family or staff from electric shock.

A residual current device, often called a safety switch, watches the flow of electricity through a circuit and disconnects the supply the instant it detects current leaking to earth. That leak is what happens when electricity finds an unintended path, such as through a person touching a faulty appliance or a damaged cable. An RCD reacts in a fraction of a second, far faster than any circuit breaker or fuse, which only protect the wiring from overload and short circuits rather than protecting people from shock.
Spark Tech Electrical installs and replaces RCDs for homeowners, landlords, and business owners across Perth. We are a licensed electrical contractor based in Padbury, so most jobs in Joondalup, Hillarys, Duncraig, Scarborough, Stirling, and Wanneroo are a short drive away, and we cover the greater Perth metro as well.
In Western Australia, residential and many commercial premises must have at least two RCDs protecting all power point and lighting circuits. The aim is that no single device failing leaves part of the property unprotected, and that lighting stays on if a power circuit trips. Homes wired before RCDs became mandatory often have one or none, which is a common finding we make when inspecting older switchboards in established northern suburbs.
There are also point of sale and lease obligations. When a property is sold or rented, the seller or owner is generally responsible for ensuring the required RCDs and hardwired, interconnected smoke alarms are in place. We can assess a property against these obligations and bring it up to standard before settlement or a new tenancy begins.
WA minimum: At least two RCDs must protect all final socket outlet and lighting circuits in domestic installations. If your switchboard has fewer, or none, it does not meet the current rules and should be upgraded by a licensed electrician.
Many Perth properties, especially those built last century, still run on switchboards that predate modern safety requirements. It is worth booking an assessment if any of the following apply to you.
Every installation starts with an inspection of your switchboard and circuits so we know exactly what is there before we touch it. We check available space, the condition of existing wiring, the earthing arrangement, and how circuits are grouped, because this determines how many RCDs are needed and whether the board itself needs upgrading.
We then fit the correct number and type of RCDs, label the board clearly, and test each device to confirm it trips within the required time. All work is completed to the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules and signed off with the relevant electrical compliance paperwork. Where the job touches the supply, metering, or network side of the connection, we coordinate with Western Power as the local network operator.
For business owners and facility managers, RCD protection is both a safety and a compliance issue. Workplaces, tenancies, and high traffic areas carry a duty to keep electrical installations safe, and RCDs are central to that. We can install RCDs across commercial switchboards, distribution boards, and individual high risk circuits, and we work around your trading hours to limit disruption.
Landlords have clear obligations at the start of each tenancy. We can audit a rental, fit the required RCDs and smoke alarms, and provide documentation you can keep on file. For agencies managing multiple properties across the northern corridor, we can work through a portfolio efficiently.
An RCD is only useful if it still works. We recommend pressing the test button on each RCD roughly every three months, which you can do yourself, and having a licensed electrician carry out a full functional test periodically, particularly for rentals and commercial sites. If a device does not trip when tested, stop relying on it and have it checked straight away.
During any visit we are happy to show you where your RCDs are, how to test and reset them, and what a trip is telling you, so you are not left guessing the next time the power drops.
We never quote a flat figure sight unseen, because honest pricing depends on the property. The main factors are how many RCDs are required, the age and condition of your existing switchboard, whether there is room to add devices or the board needs replacing, the state of the wiring and earthing, and access to the board. Older boards with deteriorated wiring or no spare capacity take more work than a straightforward swap.
We will inspect, explain what your installation needs to be compliant, and give you a clear quote before any work starts, so there are no surprises.
