Fault Finding in Perth by Spark Tech Electrical

When a circuit keeps tripping, a light flickers for no reason or half your power points go dead, something in the system has failed and it needs tracing properly. Spark Tech Electrical is a licensed WA electrical contractor (EC 17280) based in Padbury, and fault finding is one of the jobs we do most. We work through your wiring methodically to find the exact cause, then carry out a compliant repair so the problem does not come back next week.

Guessing is expensive. Swapping parts until something works wastes your money and can leave a hidden hazard live in the wall. Our approach is the opposite: isolate, test, measure, confirm, then fix.

Signs You Have an Electrical Fault

Faults rarely fix themselves and most get worse over time. The earlier you call, the smaller the repair usually is. Common warning signs we are called out for include:

  • Circuit breakers or RCDs that trip the moment you reset them, or trip randomly through the day
  • Flickering, dimming or buzzing lights that are not caused by the globe
  • Power points or switches that are warm, discoloured, crackling or have stopped working
  • A burning or fishy plastic smell near a switchboard, outlet or light fitting
  • Mild tingles from taps, appliances or metal fittings, which can signal a dangerous earthing fault
  • Sections of the house losing power while others stay on

Safety first: a burning smell, scorch marks, a buzzing switchboard or any tingle from a tap or appliance can indicate a live earthing or insulation fault. Switch the affected circuit off at the board if it is safe to do so and call a licensed electrician before using it again. In WA, fault diagnosis and repair on fixed wiring is licensed electrical work and must not be attempted DIY.

How We Find the Fault

Every fault find starts the same way: we talk to you about when it happens and what changed, then we isolate the problem to a single circuit at the switchboard. From there we use proper test gear rather than trial and error. That means insulation resistance testing, earth continuity and loop testing, RCD trip testing, voltage drop checks and, where needed, thermal imaging to spot hot joints and clamp meters to track load.

This staged method lets us separate the common culprits quickly: a failing appliance leaking to earth, water ingress in an outdoor outlet or roof, rodent-damaged or perished cabling, a loose or corroded connection, an overloaded circuit, or a faulty RCD or breaker. Once the cause is confirmed, we explain it to you in plain terms before we touch anything.

Faults We Repair

We diagnose and repair the full range of domestic and commercial faults: nuisance RCD tripping, dead circuits, failed power points and light fittings, switchboard and breaker faults, earthing and bonding problems, water-damaged wiring, and intermittent faults that only show up under load or in certain weather.

Intermittent faults are the trickiest and where a systematic electrician earns their keep. If a problem comes and goes, we will test under the conditions that trigger it rather than declaring it fixed and hoping. All repairs are completed to the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules.

Switchboards, RCDs and Compliance

A lot of fault finding ends at the switchboard, so we check it as part of the job. Under WA rules, power and lighting circuits must be protected by at least two RCDs, and many older Perth homes still run on a single safety switch or none at all. If we find your board is non-compliant or that an RCD itself has failed, we will tell you and quote the upgrade separately so you can decide.

Where a fault relates to the supply side, the meter or the connection to the street, that sits with Western Power as the network operator, and we coordinate with them rather than working on network-owned equipment. EnergySafety WA (Building and Energy) is the regulator for electrical safety in the state, and we work to those standards on every job.

Domestic and Commercial Fault Finding

For homeowners, a fault usually means tripping power, dead rooms or a smell you want checked before it becomes a fire risk. We work quickly and tidily and clear up any safety concern first.

For business owners and facility managers, an electrical fault can stop trade, spoil stock or shut down a production line. We prioritise getting you safely operational, diagnose the root cause, and can advise on preventative maintenance so the same fault does not recur during your busiest period.

Areas We Cover

From our Padbury base we cover the Perth northern suburbs including Joondalup, Hillarys, Duncraig, Scarborough, Stirling and Wanneroo, and we service the greater Perth metro area as well. Being local means we get to most northern-suburbs callouts fast, which matters when a fault has knocked out your power.

What Affects the Cost

We never quote a flat price for fault finding because no two faults take the same time to trace. The main cost factors are how long the fault takes to locate, how accessible the wiring is (roof space, walls, slab or conduit), whether the cause is a quick fix or a section of cable needing replacement, and whether the work is during business hours or an after-hours emergency. We are upfront about the diagnostic charge before we start, and we confirm the repair cost with you once the cause is known, so there are no surprises.

Fault Finding Perth FAQs

Common questions Perth homeowners and businesses ask before booking. Still not sure? Just give us a call.

An RCD trips when it detects current leaking to earth, which usually means a faulty appliance, water in an outlet, damaged cabling or moisture in a light fitting. Sometimes the RCD itself has failed. We isolate each circuit and appliance with proper testing to find the exact source, rather than just resetting it, then repair the cause to AS/NZS 3000.
No. In Western Australia, diagnosing and repairing faults on fixed wiring is licensed electrical work and must be done by a licensed electrician. You can safely switch off a tripping circuit at the board and unplug suspect appliances, but anything beyond that is unsafe and unlawful. EnergySafety WA regulates this for good reason: hidden faults can be live and dangerous.
We aim for same-day response and prioritise anything involving a burning smell, sparking, scorch marks or a tingle from taps or appliances, as those can be genuine fire or shock hazards. From our Padbury base we reach most northern-suburbs jobs in Joondalup, Hillarys, Duncraig and surrounds quickly, and we cover the wider Perth metro too.
We do not quote a flat rate because tracing time varies with the fault. Cost depends on how long it takes to locate, how accessible the wiring is, whether it is a simple fix or needs cable replacement, and whether it is during or after business hours. We confirm the diagnostic charge before starting and the repair cost once we have found the cause.
Treat it as urgent. If it is safe, switch that circuit off at the switchboard, stop using the affected outlets and do not plug anything back in. A burning or melting-plastic smell often means an overheating connection, which is a fire risk. Call a licensed electrician straight away. Do not try to open the outlet or investigate the wiring yourself.
Yes, intermittent faults are exactly where a systematic approach pays off. We gather detail on when and how it happens, then test under the conditions that trigger it, using insulation resistance testing, thermal imaging and load monitoring where needed. We will not call it fixed on a hope. We confirm the cause is resolved before we leave so it does not resurface.
