Licensed RCD safety switch and appliance test & tag services from a Padbury-based EC contractor (EC 17280), covering Joondalup, Hillarys, Stirling and the wider Perth metro. Compliant testing, clear records, and repairs handled by the same licensed team.

An RCD, or residual current device, is the safety switch that cuts power within milliseconds when it detects current leaking to earth, often through a person. It is the single most important piece of electrical protection in a Perth home or workplace, but only if it actually trips when it should. Spark Tech Electrical tests and tags RCDs and portable appliances for homeowners, landlords, and businesses, with records you can rely on at audit or sale.
We are a licensed electrical contractor (EC 17280) based in Padbury, working across the northern suburbs including Joondalup, Hillarys, Duncraig, Scarborough, Stirling and Wanneroo, plus the greater Perth metro. Because we are a full electrical contractor and not just a tagging operator, anything that fails the test can be repaired or replaced on the same visit by the same licensed team.
RCDs degrade over time. Internal mechanisms stick, components age, and a switch that looks fine on the wall can fail to trip under a real fault. The only way to know it still works is to test it, both with the push-button and with an instrument that measures trip time and trip current against the limits in the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules.
For workplaces, WA work health and safety regulations require RCDs and the electrical equipment connected to them to be tested at set intervals, with results recorded. For homes, RCDs that no longer trip leave the household exposed to electric shock and fire risk. Regular testing is cheap insurance against both.
WA rule worth knowing: Western Australian regulations require at least two RCDs protecting all power and lighting circuits in a home. At point of sale or lease this is checked, and hardwired interconnected smoke alarms must also be installed where required. If your switchboard has only one RCD, or none, we can quote the upgrade to bring it into line.
A proper RCD test is more than pressing the test button. The push-button only confirms the mechanism moves. It does not measure how fast the device trips or whether it trips within the current threshold that protects a person. We carry out a full instrument test that records the trip time and trip current for each device, then compares them against the AS/NZS 3000 limits.
Any RCD that trips too slowly, fails to trip, or shows physical damage is flagged. We talk you through the options before any repair work starts.
Test and tag covers the portable appliances and leads plugged into your power points: power tools, extension leads, kettles, monitors, chargers and the like. Each item is inspected, electrically tested and fitted with a durable tag showing the test date, the next due date and the technician. This is the standard process used to demonstrate that portable equipment is safe and compliant.
Test and tag and RCD testing work together. The RCD protects the circuit, the tag confirms the appliance on that circuit is sound. Most Perth businesses arrange both at the same visit so the whole electrical safety picture is covered in one log.
Testing frequency depends on the environment, not just the calendar. A construction site or workshop with heavy equipment and a harsh environment needs far more frequent testing than a quiet office. We help you set intervals that match your site and keep you compliant without over-servicing.
When something fails a test, you want it fixed, not just flagged on a report. As a licensed EC contractor we can replace a faulty RCD, repair or retire a failed appliance, and upgrade switchboards that do not meet the WA two-RCD requirement. Older Perth homes in suburbs like Duncraig and Wanneroo often have a single RCD or none at all, and an upgrade is straightforward for us to scope and complete.
Any work touching the network side of the supply, such as metering or the connection to the grid, involves Western Power as the network operator, and we coordinate that for you. The regulator for electrical safety in WA is EnergySafety (Building and Energy), and all of our work is carried out to meet its requirements.
We never quote a flat figure sight unseen because the work varies. The main cost factors are the number of RCDs at the board, how many portable appliances need tagging, the site type and access, your testing frequency, and whether any repairs or switchboard upgrades come out of the inspection. For businesses, a regular scheduled program usually works out more efficient than ad-hoc call-outs.
Tell us roughly how many circuits and items you have and where you are in the metro, and we will give you a clear, itemised quote before we book anything in.
